Historical note

The Newberg (Oregon) Monthly Meeting began in the home of David J. Wood on June 1, 1878, then known as the Chehalem Monthly Meeting. William Hobson was heavily involved in the meeting's beginnings. The interior of the group's first meeting house was completed in the summer of 1883. In 1886, membership had already reached 356. The group then moved to the Friends Pacific Academy gym. The school itself later moved and left the land formerly belonging to the Academy to the Monthly Meeting. The Oregon Yearly Meeting was established in June of 1893, to be thereafter headquartered in Newberg. This, along with the college move, prompted the building of the current hurch building. Though not fully completed in the summer of 1893, the new church held the opening sessions of the first annual convention of Oregon Yearly Meeting.
